HISTORY
IN-DEPTH: wiki; personal entry with novel summaries that i need to update whoops

full length bioShizuo was born in Ikebukuro, a large prefecture in Tokyo, Japan. An average kid living in an average family—really everything was normal...until at age nine his little brother, Kasuka, ate his pudding and in a fit of rage he lifted up the refrigerator as if to throw it. He succeeded in lifting it, but as expected, his little body couldn't actually handle it and he was sent to the hospital. Since then, whenever he got pissed off (and it wasn't hard), he would immediately resort to violence by lifting and throwing heavy objects. Each time his body would heal and his bones grew stronger, and with the additional supplements from drinking plenty of milk, he has grown to have this monstrous strength and short fused temper.

Now, this wouldn't have been so bad if during his high school a certain guy named Izaya Orihara decided to mess with him and deliberately set him up so that he had to fight numerous delinquents or get into situations that made him go all out. Izaya hated Shizuo for being the least human yet somehow managing to have friends, and Shizuo hated Izaya for being a manipulative bastard. This hatred would continue to present day, with the two constantly going at each other's throats. In any case, due to the constant conflict thrown into his life, Shizuo never really had a chance to deal with his abnormal strength and anger issues. He was unable to find work until a former upperclassman, Tom Tanaka, runs into him and offers him a job to be his bodyguard partner of sorts as he collects debts from those who use his company's online dating services. It works out—Shizuo's reputation makes it easier for them to cough up the cash, and when they don't Shizuo is allowed to beat them up. Tom also helps serve to keep a kind of "leash" on him, able to help distract or calm Shizuo down before he goes too far.

And so that was Shizuo's life—until Mikado came to Ikebukuro and formed the colorless gang known as the "Dollars." Thus begins the chaotic story of Durarara!! where everyone is thrown into various gang war conflicts, supernatural threats, and it boils down to the headless rider, Celty (who is one of his friends). To make things short, although Shizuo played a supporting role in many points of the series, his own story focus revolves on his violent anger and how he actually wants to become stronger to control it. Over the course of the novels, he is forced into situations that puts that to the test. First is the battle against Saika's possessed mob, and he for once is able to stop himself before causing real damage. Then comes the little girl, Akane Awakusu. At first she wants to try to kill him based on a lie Izaya had told her, but Shizuo is the one who ends up saving her from some Russian kidnappers. It's the first time he is able to utilize his strength and control his rage so that he could protect her. Then there's Vorona—who incidentally was one of the kidnappers. Through various circumstances, she winds up joining him and Tom, and for the first time Shizuo has a "kouhai" or a junior to take care of. She's also upfront about not being afraid of his strength and in fact admires it.

All these events and people is what makes the final arc most interesting for his character development. A lot of things happen, including Shizuo going to jail under false charges, Celty going crazy, Vorona stealing her head from the police and causing chaos, and Shizuo knows Izaya is behind it all and is already getting pissed off. When it finally comes down to Shizuo's and Izaya's final confrontation, Shizuo is ready to kill him and is about to deal the finishing blow by vending machine—but is stopped when Vorona intervenes. And instead of going after him when someone throws a smoke grenade into the crowd, he runs to Vorona to check on her.

Thus concludes the crazy story of Durarara!!...until the sequel comes along. And a bunch of details and important events were glossed over and skipped, but that's the gist of things for Shizuo.

PERSONALITY
If you want the giant tl;dr of his character development, I will direct you to this other profile entry. But for a short summary (that will actually be kind of short this time), Shizuo has two sides to him so that's how I'll kind of split this up.

The quiet side is how he is by default. He keeps to himself, enjoys the peace and quiet, gets lost in his own idle thoughts. Honestly, that's all what he really wants—not all the chaos and fighting that he's always thrust into. He may look like a tough guy that you don't want to mess with, but he's actually fairly gentle and awkward. Not many people really socialize with him, so he can sometimes be caught off guard. He's honest, prefers being direct and blunt, speaks his mind or opinion if he thinks it matters, sometimes rambles (especially when it's about his own problems or just passing the time), appreciates the little things. He's also friendly, but only so long as you're not clearly wasting his time or being dodgy. More on that later. Finally, he is very protective of his friends and family and is extremely loyal to them. With so many people always fearing him, he treasures the few that do stay by his side and will do whatever it takes to help them. They're also the ones he relaxes most around, so they can see that he really is a good guy.

The violent side is more related to his anger problems. He has a very short fuse—so short that he'll give a guy three minutes to talk to him before leaving and then throwing him in the air when said guy continues to bug him. Granted, the guy was a journalist and Shizuo thought an interview a waste of time, and he did warn him. But that's how it is with the man. He prefers people who are honest and direct, and those who are working an angle or are manipulative or on his blacklist. (Can thank Izaya for that.) And once he gets angry, he gets violent, which is why he actually tries to distance himself first. He really doesn't want to hurt people or get into fights, so when he feels himself getting mad, he tries everything he can to keep it under control. Chant mantras, walk away, think of something else. He gets much better about this towards the end of the series, especially when he can see the bigger picture and focus on it. But if it all fails or the person is just clearly asking for it, he let's it all go. And unless it's deserved, he doesn't really feel that great about it. He can also be strongheaded and stubborn about things, which is both a good and bad thing depending on the context.

All in all, Shizuo is a very simple guy and he likes things when they are simple. Complex nonsense is just unnecessary in his mind. He also have low self-confidence due to how people always perceive him and his own insecurities regarding his strength and anger. It's better now, but he knows he has a long way to go and will continue to strive in becoming strong enough to control himself so that he doesn't have to worry about hurting someone innocent.

ABILITIES
WEAPON: Fists and whatever he can use around him. Essence will grant him a giant shovel and assortment of screws and nails
STYLE: Big time brawler; parkour

detailsEven without his essence, Shizuo has absurd strength. With the essence, he's basically back to normal with just brief moments where it can go into "overdrive" for massive strength boost. He can pick up large objects with ease and throw them great distances. Vending machines, motorcycles, even lift up cars and kick them like a can no problem. He's uprooted a full grown tree and flung someone out of it like a baseball bat. Essentially, he has the strength to rip off a lot of things no matter how they're attached and use it as a weapon.

Normally there would be deadly downside to using his strength so haphazardly. If his muscles aren't given enough to heal properly, they can become strained and tear, leaving them in critical condition. In Forgotten Tales, this will be less of an issue, but there will still be a similar kind of weakness in that he can't just chuck things all day and night. Although he'll have more stamina than the average person, he'll still tire out after a decent amount of time.

Along with the large object throwing, Shizuo can fight with his bare hands. Despite his parkour training, he still moves on instinct. There's no actual refinement or style to his actions. He just does what needs to be done. If he sees an opening for a punch, he'll punch them. If there needs to be a headbutt, he'll headbutt them. It should be noted that he does have the strength to not only punch someone flying, but also knock their clothes off. Not kidding. It's in both the novels and anime—canon confirmed. Also, despite his great strength, he never has one-hit kills. Knock outs such as to make someone unconscious, yes, but not kill. The victims are just beaten to a bloody pulp, but they survive. Somehow.

Because he's pretty crazy strength wise and it matches Frankenstein's monster fairly well, I don't see too much of a need for any additional abilities. Instead he'll just have literal tools to use. He'll be able to conjure up a few weapons. The main will be a giant shovel, which he can use as both a blunt weapon and as a throwing spear like weapon. He'll also be able to conjure nails and screws of various sizes. These are definitely more for projectile weapons, although he could feasibly create one so big to slam it down on someone. The size and durability of these will depend on his anger. The angrier he is, the bigger and stronger they are.

His strongest element will be lightning. When he gets angry he'll emit an electric charge, and if he reaches a certain point or is struck by electricity or lightning, he'll hit a kind of "over drive" that allows him to perform really big powerful attacks. It's a one time deal, though, and after that he's exhausted or even knocked out for a period of time. His weakness will be fire and ice. Any types of attacks with those elements will deal considerably more damage.
